Workshops for new or potential chicken keepers.

We run short workshops from our premises on Poultry Keeping through the year lasting at least 1 hour. Courses may take longer depending on number of attendees.

Courses Dates for 2017 are scheduled for the following Sundays:

  • 26 February
  • 30 April
  • 21 May
  • 25 June
  • 23 July
  • Saturday 19 August 12:00
  • 17 September
  • 29 October

Courses start at 11.00 at a cost of £15 per person. Please book if you would like to attend.

It is recommended that sturdy footwear and weather proof clothing is worn as this is an outdoor course. Part of the course can be carried out inside our barn if there is heavy rain.

As the course involves handling the birds it is advisable that sensible clothing is worn in case of scratches. If you are considering keeping chickens it is important to know how to handle them correctly, but there is always an element of risk in handling any animal.

Please advise us beforehand if you will struggle to stand for the duration of the course so that we can arrange seating.

The course is designed for the beginner intending to look after adult or point of lay birds, and will include:

  • Introductions
  • Before Buying the Birds - Housing
  • Before Buying the Birds - Essential Equipment & Supplies
  • How to Handle
  • Bringing Them Home
  • Feeding
  • Care
  • Parasites & Health
  • Eggs
  • Personalities / Habits

We do not have a public toilet on our premises. The Stanhope Arms Hotel however serve excellent coffee and have facilities!

Basic starter packs and the Omlet Eglu Go starter pack will be available to purchase to take away with you after the course. Wooden Poultry Houses and Runs can be available made to order. Telephone or email to arrange.

If you would like a course tailored to specific requirements, ie chicks, hatching etc, or you cannot make our usual course dates, then please contact us and we will do our best to accommodate you. There will be a minimum charge of £30.
